1832 paper: CAPE BUFFALO of South Africa; Westminster Abbey; Lombardy laborers

Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE July 7, 1832 This is a vintage paper which is over 190 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7.5 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical slight disbinding marks at the spine, and some minor browning spots from age, but is still in excellent and attractive condition. The cover has a full-page article on THE CAPE BUFFALOBOS CAFFER. It has a nice wood-engraving, and the text says, in part: The Boors and Hottentots describe the buffalo to be, what his aspect strongly indicates, an animal of a fierce, treacherous, and cruel disposition. Even when not provoked by wounds or driven to extremity in the chase, they say he will attack, with the utmost ferocity, his great enemy man, if he happens to intrude incautiously upon his haunts; and what render him the more dangerous is his habit of skulking in the jungle, when he observes travellers approaching, and then suddenly rushing out upon them. . . . if he succeeds in killing a man by goring and tossing him with his formidable horns, he will stand over his victim afterwards for a long time, trampling upon him with his hoofs, crushing him with his knees, mangling the body with his horns and stripping off the skin with his rough and prickly tongue. . . . The article continues by expressing some skepticism about the accuracy of this menacing portrait, and gives more realistic descriptions of how both the Boers and the natives hunt these powerful and sometimes dangerous animals, to the point that, the buffalo is now nearly extirpated throughout every part of the Cape Colony, except in the large forests or jungles in the eastern districts, where, together with the elephant, he still finds a precarious shelter. Also in the issue is an article of a page and a half on Westminster Abbey, with 2 wood engravings; and a page on the laborers in the Lombardy region of Italy. ************************* Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and every issue was illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
