The obverse and the reverse surfaces are brilliant with lots of luster. The "cartwheel" effect is easily demonstrated as the coin is rotated under light. Both sides have some rim toning. In addition, this coin also displays the features of the variety identified as VAM-35. This variety is primarily identified by Liberty's EYELID being doubled at the lower edge and the front of the EYE is also doubled. Additionally, the date is set further to the right than is normal. These features were discovered in August 1983. At a later date it was noted that on the reverse, the top of the right wreath is doubled towards the rim of the coin. These features can easily be seen with a low-power glass. The term VAM derives from the first initials of Leroy Van Allen's and A. George Mallis' last names. These two researchers noticed differences between coins produced in the same year and at the same mint. They began to photograph and catalog these differences to identify the different die varieties in the Morgan and Peace silver dollar series. For the VAM collector or for the person that wants to begin, this particular coin is a terrific and rare find, since it is one of the HOT-50 Morgan Dollar Varieties and is noted on the NGC label of the coin's holder. The coin in the photos is the one being offered. Thank you for looking.
