This was the very first color supplement produced on a high speed newspaper press, developed in late 1892 in preparation for the Exposition. The Inter Ocean was released 3 times per week at times during the Exposition. There were many types of prints and publications published during this time of the Fair, but These are by far the most rare of all the collections related to the fair we have discovered. The World's Columbian Exposition was held from May to October 1893 in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. In competition with many other cities, Chicago was finally designated the official site, and the Exposition was built on 630 acres in and around Jackson Park. It was a spectacular display of progress and prosperity, and included among its many wonders were electrical displays, exhibits from other countries, and a popular amusement area on the Midway Plaisance with carnival rides-- among them the first Ferris Wheel. Most of the fair's architecture was based on classical design and lathered with white paint which gave the area around the Court of Honor the name "The White City." CONDITION: This almost 130 year old Print/Sheet Item is rated Very Fine +. It was printed in 1893, making it about 130-years-old.Light aging throughout. Original mailing center crease. Some light surface rub. Note: No major tears (except one edge tears, shown, near bottom text, not affecting main part of the print). Light water staining and tiny edge tears (on some). Please note; as this is an original supplement to The Inter-Ocean, there is printing text and small unrelated illustrations on the verso side. Also Note: That any white marks on parts of the print are scanner or camera created lighting/ reflective ghost images caused by the clear plastic sheet protector, and Not on the Original you will receive. In addition, these supplements were protected over the last century while bound into their original custom binding and therefore the original binder holes or marks may be in place or visible on one margin, as seen in the digital picture. These holes or markings/ rough edges, can easily be hidden via matting when being framed, if the buyer chooses to do so.
