1930s Chief Gall Hunkpapa Sioux Indian Gum Card Anon V416 V254 Allen & Ginter

Description: This scarce Card VARIATION IS OFTEN REFFERED TO AS THE ANNONYMOUS ISSUED SERIES. It makes no mention of a manufacturer on it, however the style, size and image is identical a series issued by the CANADIAN CHEWING GUM Co. as an insert premium with their Papoose Gum in the 1930’s identified as V254 in Burdicks American Card Catalogue, and the series issued by the Hamilton Chewing Gum under the title TEEPEE gum identified as series V416. The date is hard to pin down on this one. The Canadian Chewing Gum issues were definitely issued in the 1930’s. The Non Sports Bible indicates that the TEEPEE series may have been issued in the 1950’s by parkhurst. I know this is incorrect because I have the Wrapper for the TEEPEE series and it indicates the manufacturer as Hamilton Chewing Gum ( and it is a 2 cent wrapper). Hamilton Chewing Gum also issued the V289 Hollywood Stars series in 1938, and the V290 Cowboy Series in the 1930’s as well according to the Non Sports Bible). As I mentioned the Hamilton Chewing Gum TeePee wrapper that I own is a 2 Cent wrapper. However the backs of this card indicate that this series was given away with 1cent Sticks of TeePee Picture Gum. I have seen counter boxes for other card series where the cards are wrapper free. The idea being you buy one card and take one stick of gum for 1 cent I speculate that the series without the teepee gum name (anonymous issue series) may have been the series issued by Hamilton Gum in the 2 cent TeePee Picture Gum Wrapper I have (possibly at a later date), Often all three types of backs are found together in lots when you come across them, so it it is still a mystery. The front of the card features an image of the particular chief (taken from the paintings housed in the Library of Congress), while the back features a brief history of the Native American featured on the front, in both French & English.. This is a nice addition when compared to the other sets using these images. The Allen and Ginter and other companies did not have any descriptions or history about the featured chiefs. The images used are the same used on other insert cards put out by Allen & Ginter Tobacco , American Caramel and Weber Bread to name a few. This card is number 22 in the series and features CHIEF GALL of the HUNKPAPA SIOUX tribe. The Card measures 2 13/16 inches by 2 7/8 inches approximately. The card does have some creasing and wear. I have scanned the card fairly large, both front and back, for you to be able to judge condition for yourself. I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities and Circus themes.
