Click images to enlarge Description Up for sale today is a extremely RARE 1962-P FULL STEP JEFFERSON NICKEL. What makes this nickel so rare is because, not only is it a FULL STEP NICKEL, it is also known as a "Black Beauty" nickel. This is because of the dark "patina color" of the nickel. The short version reason for this is the Philadelphia mint had a problems with the metal they used to produce their nickels for some of the years in the 1950's and early 1960's which resulted in the nickels being darker than the Denver mint's nickels. This was caused by an "annealing" (heating) problem during the heat treating process for the metal used to make these nickels. "Black Beauty" nickels are VERY RARE and range from very dark to medium dark. I removed this coin myself from an Original 1962-P Mint Sewn Bag. PLEASE NOTE: The 1987 nickel is NOT for sale. It is only for comparison purposes to show how dark the "Black Beauty" nickel is that is for sale. ALSO, this particular nickel is considered an "error" nickel and not one of my normal "Mint State" quality nickels therefore it might have more "bag" marks or "scratches" than normal due to the softness of the metal as a result of the annealing problem.
