Description: This lot consists of eight (8) Springer-listed tax-paid cigarette stamps #TA174C, i.e.: Series 104 (1934). 20 Class A cigarettes. Each stamp bears a cancellation consisting of "B & W" (Brown and Williamson) and a two-character alphanumeric "freshness code". The "freshness code" indicated when the cigarettes were packaged. The manufacturer (B & W) used the 12-character word "QUESTIONABLY" (in addition to other 12-character words) to represent the twelve months of the year. Thus, the "freshness code" would consist of the letter in the word "QUESTIONABLY" corresponding to the month of manufacture followed by the last digit of the Series # (or year). These eight stamps spell out "ESTIONAB", missing the leading "QU" and the trailing "LY". NOTE: Some stamps have typical noticeable creases. However, none have significant faults.
