Description: Tribal Artifact of Asmat Male and Female Figures Inverted Joined by Hands and Feet from Papua New Guinea –Lot 847 This primitive and unique Asmat inverted male and female figures joined by hands and feet facing opposite sides, oblong face, oval eyes, long nose, female figure holding male's feet and standing on male genitals, male figure is holding head of what it seems to be a hornbill with beak to his chin, both decorated with incised ornamentation on the body. Hand carved from a single piece of wood with traces of lime, red ochre, charcoal. There are old inventory numbers on the back of neck (384).The intricate tribal artifact is a must-have for fans of Pacific Islands culture and ethnicities. The figures have not been modified and are in their original form, making them a great addition to any collectibles collection. Bring home a piece of Papua New Guinea with these Asmat male and female figures. Provenance: A private collection. Collected over 50 years ago during an expedition into the interior of New Guinea along the Sepik River region and selected prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.Condition: This piece is hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen along the Sepik River. Some natural wear and tear exceptional condition for its age. Please review detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections, it might exhibit signs of environmental exposure, insect degradation or utilitarian use, chips, natural wood splits, patina, polish from handling and repairs that are consistent with its age.
