Don't Let Her Know (Instrumental Version) I DON'T CARE was the first LP to feature Buck’s characteristic mixture of material showcasing himself and the Buckaroos. For several years during the peak of his career, Buck's albums would feature his then current hit or hits, along with covers of other artists’ hits — sung by Don Rich or another member of the Buckaroos, plus a couple of instrumentals. The reason for this album, his third that year, was yet another huge Country smash: “I Don’t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)." The catchy, commercial number had held the #1 position for six weeks. The album included, appropriately enough, Roger Miller’s summer hit "Dang Me." Miller, a successful Nashville songwriter, had a couple of hits a few years earlier. He was ready to give up on his recording career when this particular single took off. Buck and Don sang it here as a duet. "Don’t Let Her Know.” co-written by Buck. Don Rich and Buck’s ex-wife Bonnie Owens, was one of his more underrated ballads, with Buck and Don singing harmony. One of two instrumentals. "Buck’s Polka" allowed the boss to remind everyone that Don wasn’t the only hot picker in the band. It was, after all, Buck’s own lead guitar work at a 1953 Tommy Collins recording session that impressed Ken Nelson enough to use him as a Capitol studio musician and in turn, led to his recording contract. This number was the third song recorded at this session, and, as usual, Buck winged the arrangement: "I didn't give anybody any time to figure out anything. I'd say ‘look, I wanna teach it to you...now let’s play it...okay, record it.’ In the back of my mind, I always knew that one of these days I'm gonna put out a guitar album." He later did an entire LP: the now-rare, The Guitar Player. "Understand Your Man," a current hit for Johnny Cash, was a suitable vocal vehicle for the band’s deep-voiced bassist Doyle Holly. (After leaving the Buckaroos, Holly later went on to record the hit "The Queen of the Silver Dollar" in 1973). "Loose Talk,” the Carl Smith favorite, was an oldie that Buck had recorded with Rose Maddox and various California studio pickers in 1961. "You're Welcome Anytime" highlighted Buck and Don on harmonies and was recorded specifically for this album. Doyle Holly covered the 1963 George Hamilton IV hit, "Abilene." "Playboy," co-written by Eddie Miller and Bob Morris (who played bass on this session), had originally been recorded by Wynn Stewart in 1960. "Bud’s Bounce." the steel guitar anthem written and recorded in the fifties by pioneer pedal steel guitarist Bud Isaccs, became a Tom Brumley instrumental showcase. Doug Kershaw’s "Louisiana Man” was a solo vocal feature for Don, who overdubbed both vocal parts and played fiddle as well; and the album finished with a rousing version of the Bob Morris-Eddie Miller composition, "This 0l' Heart." The bonus tracks on this disc include instrumental versions of "I Don’t Care" and "Don’t Let Her Know.” Both are played by the Buckaroos, feature Don Rich and Tom Brumley, and are from the LP, The Buck Owens Songbook. Buck had been working toward stardom for well over a decade in 1964, and the fruits of his labors were beginning to appear. The next few years would be his greatest of all. ~ Rich Kienzle SHIPPING TO USA ONLY Buyer Pays Shipping $3.99 1st CD $3.99... each additional $1.50 CDs will only be combined with other CDs or DVDs To qualify for the combined discount, all items must be purchased together, paid for with 1 payment, and shipped all together in 1 shipment.
