Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, “Flying Boxcar”), which had the designation R4Q in the US Navy, is an American military transport aircraft developed by Fairchild Republic based on the Fairchild aircraft during World War II C-82 Packets. It made its first flight in November 1947, and by the time aircraft production ceased in 1955, just over 1,100 aircraft had been produced. Served for the transport of goods, personnel, patients on stretchers and mechanized equipment, as well as for the landing of cargo and troops. The aircraft got its nickname "Flying Boxcar" due to its unusual appearance and carrying capacity. The C-119 is a deeply modified Fairchild C-82 Packet, produced from 1945-1948, and used by the Tactical Air Command and the US Military Transportation Service for nine years. During this time, serious structural problems of the aircraft were discovered, for the elimination of which modernization was undertaken. The C-119 prototype, designated XC-82B, made its first flight in November 1947, and serial production of the aircraft was launched in December 1949. The aircraft was built on a two-beam scheme. Unlike the C-82, the cockpit of the C-119 was moved forward, which resulted in improved aerodynamic properties, an increase in the capacity of the cargo compartment and the size of the cargo carried.
