Inspired by Caravaggio's renderings of the subject, this piece shows the artist's sketch for David, modeled by his longtime muse Jon Anderson. The artist appears in the final composition as the decapitated, yet cheerful, giant. Lincoln Kirstein writes, "Cadmus's interpretation of this paradoxically unequal struggle is balanced by affection...A wry, semi-geriatric giant, having lost his head in love, is actually winner over loneliness, age, and estrangement." This is one of several studies for Cadmus's painting "David and Goliath" from 1971, some of them very quick sketches, others very finished drawings. The painting, and this study, depict the young Anderson as David and the older Cadmus as Goliath. Jon Anderson (1937-2018) met Paul Cadmus in 1965, and the two were partners for 36 years until Cadmus's death in 2000. Cadmus drew and painted Anderson hundreds of times. A more finished version of this subject is Number 62, illustrated on page 93, of the catalogue for the 1981 exhibition "Paul Cadmus Yesterday and Today, presented by the University of Miami in 1981. Two other studies are illustrated on page 67 of Davenport, "the Drawings of Paul Cadmus, Rizolli, 1989. Similar studies are housed in museums and archives, such as The Morgan Library & Museum (New York, NY) and the Smithsonian. Cadmus provided a detailed oral history to the Smithsonian in 1988. In it, he addresses his "David and Goliath" (among other topics); the oral history has been transcribed and is available digitally at no cost. About Paul Cadmus Paul Cadmus [b. 1904, New York; d.1999, Weston, Connecticut, USA] was a figurative painter who came to national attention as a result of the US Navy’s confiscation of his 1934 painting The Fleet’s In! Though his work of the late 1940s and 1950s was somewhat eclipsed by the rise of Abstract Expressionism, he enjoyed a loyal collecting base [including Cole Porter, Lincoln Kirstein and, later, Malcolm Forbes] throughout his long career. In the 1970s, he was reclaimed by the gay press as a pioneering figure whose homoerotic art had cleared the way for Tom of Finland and Robert Mapplethorpe, among many others. Cadmus continued to make art, including numerous nude sketches of his lover Jon Andersson, until his death a few days shy of his ninety-fifth birthday. ShippingThis item ships free and insured.
