Description: Rare daguerreotype of Major Joseph Koger (born 1779), “Father of the Mississippi Senate”. identified by a period note affixed to the pad. A note, from online: “Notwithstanding Major/Senator Koger's purported offer of freedom to his South Carolina slaves in 1838, numberless acts of kindness and liberality, service to his fellow creatures, life as a patriot and a Christian, etc., it must also be noted that the 1860 U.S. Census Sl@ve Schedules show he still owned 41 male and 39 female sl@ves, a total of 80 fellow human beings, and his patriotism was to the Confederacy, not the United States of America.” Dag is in very good antique condition overall.. unsealed with a tarnish ring. Several small mat abrasions, mostly along the upper half mat edges. Case covers are separated with matching design, both hook clasps are present. Boxed & signed Priority Mail.
