It was issued in and is dated September 2, 2009. A polymer plastic note, it was produced in France. It depicts Braulio Evaristo Carrillo Colina, a towering figure in Costa Rican history. He served as the Head of State (the title used before the 1848 reform) during two distinct periods: 1835-1837 and 1838-1842. A lawyer, politician, and merchant, Carrillo's leadership left a profound mark on the nation. He is widely recognized as the "Architect of the Costa Rican State" for his monumental contributions to law, politics, finance, and the economy. During his terms, he enacted crucial reforms, abolished slavery, and centralized power, laying the groundwork for Costa Rica's future as a stable and democratic republic. Costa Rica is one of the most prosperous, progressive and stable nations in Latin America. It ABOLISHED its army in 1949 becoming one of the very few states without one.
