In 1989, the master tapes of Mravinsky's personal engineer, Shugal, which had been lying dormant in the tape warehouse of Leningrad Broadcasting Station, were released as a product. The sudden release of previously unreleased recordings from the 1960s to Shostakovich's 12th Symphony in 1984, which was the last recording, came as a huge shock to listeners. These recordings had only been stored digitally, but on this occasion, the master recordings have been upconverted and mastered by FLAIR Mastering works Yamazaki Kazushige using Victor's proud K2 technology, and will finally be released as the first SACD. As you know, Shostakovich was the most important composer for Mravinsky and continued to have a major influence on his career throughout his life, starting with the premiere of Symphony No. 5. All three symphonies included here were premiered by Mravinsky, and there are multiple recordings of No. 5 in particular as part of his regular repertoire (No. 8 is another important work. However, there is no recording of No. 9, which was premiered). All recordings except for No. 10 were made in his final years, and No. 12 in particular is considered an especially important record as it was the last recording. However, all are in stereo and the recording quality is among the best of Mravinsky's works, so its rarity has been unshakable since its first release in 1989. The tense, tight expression of No. 5, which is typical of Mravinsky, and the clear sound that seems to see through the background of the piece seem to shake the soul. The recording date was also April 4, 1984, which is almost the last. Since the Melodiya recording of No. 10 from the same period is mono, this performance is valuable as it is the only one in stereo. The performance is just as condensed as No. 5, and the speed and unity of the second movement, and the amazing ensemble ability are particularly worth listening to. The Melodiya recording of No. 12, recorded in 1961 just after the premiere, is also well known (Mravinsky refused to record any sessions after this piece). This recording has a narrow left-right spread, but it is a stereo recording, and the passion of the performance is tremendous, and the tempo is fast, so it is attractive, but in terms of sound quality, the last recording from April 30, 1984 is probably better. The introduction is more solemn than the 1961 version, and no other performance leaves a stronger impact than this one. Once the main Allegro section begins, it takes over, and the high level of perfection and technical skill, especially the fast woodwind passages, are overwhelming. As a work, it has been met with mixed reviews in the West, but what was it that Mravinsky wanted to show in the end? Although it shows a strong attitude of essentially letting the music speak for itself, there is no other performance that even makes you think about the background that is connected to the 5th Symphony.
