Description: This rare antique Stiegel-type flip glass was given to my physician father early in his career (circa 1937) by a grateful elderly patient. She was aware of his love for antiques, and indeed he always gave it a prominent place in our home, often referring to it as "probably the best" of all his antique glassware. Now I am in that "elderly" club myself, I would like to help it find its way to reside with a serious collector or museum where it will be recognized for its beauty and craftsmanship. (When one considers flip was made by plunging a red hot poker into an alcohol mixture filling such a fragile vessel, it is a miracle this has survived for over 200 years! Who among us hasn't lost a nice wine glass when a guest was a little to "animated?" Approximate dimensions: 9" tall, 6" wide at the top, 4" wide at the base. Of course because there are perhaps only one or two signed Stiegel pieces known to exist today, one like this must be described as "Stiegel-type," but it compares favorably with other authenticated pieces in museum collections (although none that I've found quite as large as this.) I'll assume anyone wishing to pay within the auction value I am asking will be more of an authority on glass than I, so I won't embarrass myself by venturing further into the history of flip or colonial glassware. Among my photos is one of the appraisal/valuation I received from the online service valuemystuff.com.I am selling this (of course) with satisfaction guaranteed or returns accepted within 30 days. If you have questions, or need more photos or information, please ask in advance.
