Description: TEA ROOM - Prince George Hotel - NEW YORK - 1920: This White Border Era vintage postcard, mailed in 1920, shows the tea room in the Prince George Hotel, a 14 story hotel at 14 East 28th Street. The hotel was one of New York's largest early 20th century hotels and had a Beaux-Arts exterior, with a rusticated limestone base, red brick and white terra-cotta trim above, and three-dimensional sculptural ornaments. The ground floor included the pictured Ladies' Tea Room with its trellised piers and arches, Rookwood faience fountain, lighting set within opalescent glass cartouches, and murals by George Inness, Jr. By the early 1990s the hotel had been abandoned. Common Ground Community, a nonprofit housing development and management group, took over the hotel and by 1998 had developed the property into a residence with 416 efficiency apartments for the formerly homeless and lower-income working single adults earning between $13,000 and $30,000 a year. The Ladies’ Tea Room, shown in the postcard as it was in the early 1900s when the card was produced, has since been meticulously restored to its turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts grandeur. It is presently offered for hire as an elegant event space by Common Ground. The card is in good condition, but it has some edge wear.
